Teaching Practise

Teaching Procedures

I had the opportunity to teach 4 times. I teach in grades 7, 8, and 9. I find that the teaching procedures at Future School are more or less the same as teaching procedures at other schools. Before I teach in class, I am asked to make a lesson plan first because the lesson plan will be my reference when teaching later.

In this article, I will explain the teaching procedures that I apply in class 7. Like teaching procedures in general, I start the class by greeting the students. After that, I did a little brainstorming, the aim of which was to make my students recall the material they had studied previously. They are quite good at remembering the material they have studied. I then give a little idea about what topic they will study. The way I give an overview of the topic is by showing a short video and they will start guessing about what they will learn in this class. After watching the video, I ask the students to do the assignments in the book that are appropriate to the topic they will study.

They did the task quickly. Therefore, I provide a game that is related to today's material. I first divided them into 3 groups. I explained the rules and how to play the game.

When the game started, the students were very enthusiastic to answer every question I asked. When they successfully answer a question, they will get a clue that can be used to solve the problem on the board.

We are at the end of the game, and the difference in points for each group is very thin. However, Group 1 managed to emerge as the winner because they managed to answer the last question.

The winning team will get a special prize from me. After playing the game, I went back to explain a little of the material and then closed the class because time was over.

Time management and organization of activities

I think my time management was not good because it was the first time for me to teach in a fairly short period of time where I only had 40 minutes. Therefore, I missed 5 minutes when teaching. For activity management, I am quite confident because I have prepared long ago, so I am quite fast in managing students when we are going to play games.

Classroom Management

I think my class management is also quite good because when I teach I don't just focus on one student but I also often go around paying attention to all the students and help direct them when working on questions. When playing the game, the situation was a bit beyond my expectations because they were too enthusiastic but in the end, I was helped by one of the teacher assistants.

Problem-solving

What was my hardest challenge was understanding the students' characters because it was my first time teaching abroad. So I first try to introduce them by inviting them to discuss the topic of that day's lesson.

Second, I have problems with language because some of the students have poor English skills, therefore, I try to use simple English and speak more slowly so that those who are less able to speak English can follow.
